Under the Shelter of His Covering

Coffee With God: February 17th, 2023 | Numbers 30:16

"These are the statutes that the Lord commanded Moses about a man and his wife and about a father and his daughter while she is in her youth within her father’s house.”

The image of a covering is one that can be seen all throughout the Bible. It is not a modern idea. It is not wrong. It is not egotistical, patriarchal, or misogynistic. God is and always has been a covering to his people. He is a shield and a guardian. He looks out for our best interest. Not that he saves us from every hardship or trial. But he is there in the midst of them. He is a cloud by day and a fire by night.

As God covers his people, so is a man called to cover his family. This is accomplished through steadfast love, devotion, and sacrifice. As a man learns to live under God’s covering, he is able to act as a covering for those he has been entrusted to care for. Men are not alone in taking on this role. Women also learn to be covered by God, by their husbands; and learn to be a covering to their families and children.

The best way to be a covering to others is to first learn how to be covered. Mainly by God himself, and then by those he has placed over you for your good.
