Coffee With God: February 21st, 2023 | Romans 8:3-4
“For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do. By sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, in order that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”
Why was the law unable to bring salvation to the world? Simple. The people of the world didn’t need a nice “cleaning up.” We needed to be re-made altogether.
By sending his Son as an atoning sacrifice for sin – the perfect man dying to pay the penalty for sinners – God has done something unthinkable. He has opened the pathway for sinners to be reborn. What the law was powerless to accomplish – create righteous people – God has done through his Son. Now, we become righteous through our faith in Jesus, and as a result, receive the opportunity to be led by the Holy Spirit moment by moment.
The law revealed God’s righteous standard. It was powerless to save sinners because it required righteous people to live it out. What it could not do, God has done. What the law required God has created in Jesus; people made right through faith. And every time we walk in step with the Spirit, we not only fulfill the law’s righteous requirement, but we also reveal the Righteous One in the process.
